Price the cost to fix this bike please!
 

Hey everyone, I am looking at buying an F4i but had some questions.
Its a 2006 with 3,940 miles and he is asking $5,000, I figure I will find the price of new forks and ask that much below his price so I can replace them.

Look at the pictures, what all is involved in cleaning up the forks? There is some corrosion on them as well as some rust in other areas (bolts on calipers) What all would I need to do to clean that up and how much do you estimate it would cost?

I just didnt know where to look for the parts, or if I found a price if I was getting ripped or not. Thanks!

I have heard this from other people, care to comment on if it is accurate or not:

-The bolts on the calipers are okay until you go to do the pads.. you can replace them both at the same time.

-Can't say for sure about the fork tubes because I don't know the year, but all you really need to do is replace the tube that's corroded. They run about $170 brand new, It's only $340 to get the bike in top condition.

- Pull off the chain and soak it overnight in kerosene. That will take the rust off. If not, you can get a new one.

I'd say not a penny over $500, and that's like service wages at a shop. You're definitely going to want a new chain. I'd just go ahead and get a new kit. Nothing deal breaking but I would try to negotiate on the price with him. Maybe try to get him to come down 2-300.

yea you def dont need the forks or the tubes, theres is no way in hell you';ll ever compress it that high. Get some really really fine sand paper and soak it in transmission fluid (helps prevent and disolve rust) then scuff up the parts that are corroded then hit it up with some metal polish until its smooth again.

Get a new chain, take a little bit of wd-40 to the fork tubes, and take the caliper pins out one at a time and wire wheel them to clean them off. DONE.

The owner left this poor bike out in the rain one too many times!

So if I wanted to completely replace the front forks, what options do I have?

I dont think thats what I really need, all I am doing is daily commuting and weekend road trips.
What do you guys normally swap them out with? Or should I just pick up a set of used stock forks
