overheating?

First off new to the sight...
I have an 02 f4i and while riding the temperature is at about 190 but when stopped it reaches up to 220 and 230 degrees F. Is this normal or running to hot or what?

MEDCOXO 05-27-2010 12:05 AM

Mine does the same. As long as it does not go to 250,, then you are in trouble. On the highway it will be lower, then in traffic it will shot up to the 220's. It should drop as soon as you are moving and get some air hitting the cooling system.Right now I am looking into whether I want to go with Water Wetter or Engine Ice. I have searched other forums, adn cannot find one over the other. The difference seems to be that Water Wetter is for track racing, and does not protect from freezing. Engine Ice will protect from freezing. In the end I may just go with 60% Deionized water adn 40% antifreeze.

youre fine if it doesnt get much higher than 230-as in 1-2 degrees ish. your fans kick on at 225

overheating

Okay cool. Yea, as Im driving pretty fast the temperature lowers down but at stop lights and stuff it rises up. The manual says about it not going up to 250 and I figured 230 was pretty close. I dont want it to over heat or blow up.... I am taken it on a 2 hour ish ride to the Jersey shore this weekend. Im just worried about the really hot days that it doesnt go up to high.

Thanks for the info I'm new to the site/riding in general and was going to ask the same question.

i think your temp is normal, my cbr produce the same temp also

Gotpepsi 05-27-2010 03:15 AM

yeah thats perfectly normal. My bike gets around 229-228 on a hot day stopped at a red light, than once i start driving again within the city its about 205. High way temp is usually 177 on a summer night, and 180-187 on a hot day (99-102 degrees)

ok I am having the same prob, I also have an 02 F4i and I was sitting in traffic on monday and it hit 224-225, I looked down and didn't see the fan spinning but the light turned green and I started going and the temp went down and it never got that high again. Vangill are you sure the fan kicks on at 225? Or am I just over worried that the bikes gonna overheat?

MEDCOXO 05-29-2010 09:03 PM

I am with GOTPEPSI, I went on a ride today, it was 79, adn those were the same temps I am running. I think all I will do is change the coolant and KISS. Bought the bike used, so I am nto sure what the previous ownder did for maintenance, so I am getting ALL the maintenance completed, ,, its an 06 with 6500 miles,,and then it will be just like new.

Gotpepsi 05-30-2010 12:32 AM

Well i dont think you really need to worry, but its probably needed to change the coolent anyways. I dont think your temps are going to change much though, i never went higher than 233. And my fan kicks in at around 225-226 im not sure which. Then the temp raises to around 229 for about 4 mins then drops to 228-227-226 and back up to 228-227 lol
