One aspect of Steering Dampers?

I did search last night and read everything available on this site as well as what the products themselves would assure.

There is one thing i have my attention, and it bothers me quite a bit...the freeways here in L.A. are made of concrete which is very hard, but it has these rain grooves in it. It's not like asphalt where i'm much more confident.
I'm a fairly new rider...I have just under a year under my belt with about 5k to credit. I graduated to an 05 600 F4i AND i'm loving it!

That fact that is L.A. the traffic is bad and i hate to say this, but you have to watch out for gals in their SUVs's talking on cell phones.

So, my question is to you will the steering damper help...with the rain grooves in the concrete, which slightly bumpy and not consistent with height and with of the grooves?? In other words will the damper at least take my attention of the road a bit so i can concentrate on other "distractions".

the answer is yes and no, if u get a damper it will improve your confidence but everyone is gonna say learn to ride then get a damper. i have concrete highways here with the grooves, i just hold on and use my legs to go back and forth if i get into the grooves. your damper will help you stay in a strait line and help prevent tank slap. thing is you should be aware of everythign when on ur bike, a damper wont get your attention off everythign else. i would say save your money and get something else. you have riding boots/good gear/good helmet things like that, frame sliders if not get those then think about a damper later

I know what you are saying and figured the vets would say such things. I guess with all these factors having my attention off one thing, which is definitely a riding/physics issue that i can actually enjoy my freeway rides.

I say don't get one. I had that same problem going to anaheim and going along the 57 between carpool lane and #1 lane. I just learn the read the road and not get flicked side to side as much and just got use to the bike getting caught in those groves. Sorta like riding a dirt bike, i had to get use to the bike being lose and sliding and just tons of wheel spin which it did remind me of the tires following the rain grooves! I remember playing with my steering head bearing preload to try and minimize the feel while not loosing my handling. I found a really nice blend it just took time to find it. Also tire pressure making sure they are good helps too! But if you want a damper you should get a scotts. They have the most adjustability and you can set the low speed and high speed independently unlike GBR which is stiff all the time or soft. Don't know if this helps or not, hope so

Well at least you are familiar with grooves. I did recently rode on a older CBR with the steering damper and it was so smooth and left such impression on me. So...
Got it on the Scotts. Cheers.
