Oil Change Interval

Hey guys, new to 2 wheels. What are the factory specs for oil changes? Interval, type, weight, amount, filter, part numbers, etc? I've seen some people use Repsol, some use Rotella ,etc. Got a used 02 with about 14k on her, just wanna keep her running good until I'm ready to move up. Thanks!

skoobydoobie 06-03-2009 10:58 PM

Download a manual from one of the stickeys. Read this...http://redirectingat.com/?id=42X146&...nsumables.html . I use Rotella T in the blue jug and the wal-mart filter. If you just bought this bike there's some more maint. that needs to be done. And do searches for your problems before you ask, most of the issues have been covered more than once. Oh and welcome to the 2 wheeled world.

I go full synthetic. It runs the best IMO. I go either 10w40 or 10w50. Mobil One or Spectro (spelling). It depends too how hard you ride, how much, and so on. I'll change mine again in 3500 miles.

cman9toes 06-03-2009 11:53 PM

I second what skooby said. It is all been covered, but 6k change intervals, Rotella synthetic 5-40 with walmart supertec filter

sleestak 06-04-2009 12:23 AM

I can't believe my local shop charges 80 bucks to do an oil change on this bike. Seems VERY high.

What are you guys paying for oil changes these days?

florida f4i 06-04-2009 12:49 AM

I refuse to pay someone to change mine, whether it be on a car or bike.

The local shop charges 49.99 for the basic change, I believe it's more for better filters/oil.

When I change mine (~3000-3500 miles), I use Amsoil synthetic 10w-40 along with, as of right now, an OEM filter.

May be changing that up, though (the filter part).

cman9toes 06-04-2009 08:25 AM

It is so easy to chang the oil there is no need to pay someone. You only need a 12mm wrench(in the honda tool kit) the instructions say to take the fairings off, but I take just left side. Not hard at all.

$20 for oil and filter at Wally world

chuckbear 06-04-2009 12:55 PM

+1 to skooby. Rotella T full synth all the way with the premium filter from walmart for like $7.

Another plus about synthetic, besides being better for your bike, is that it has a lot longer life. I've heard it touted to last twice as long as conventional oil, though I'm sure you could find some more specific literature on that..

florida f4i 06-04-2009 01:37 PM

Yeah, there are a ton of articles online, telling of how it lasts longer because it breaks down slower, has higher resistance to heat, etc.

I've never had to remove fairing(s) to change the oil n filter lol.

I too use Rotella and do it myself in 20 minutes or less.

dave ls1 06-04-2009 01:50 PM

I had to remove the right side fairing to get a filter wrench on it the first time I changed the oil after buying it used. No idea who put it on last, but it was on there crazy tight.

Thanks, I already have a manual and I did a search, this forum's search function leaves a lot to be desired. I was looking more for a part number for a filter than anything, just thought I'd ask for the rest while it was on topic. My main concern is the filter...I assume they don't have the part number index book for oil filters for motorcyclces readily available at many retailers...looks like I might be wrong? Do I just go to Wallymart and say I have an 02 F4i, what filter do I use? I really didn't think it would be that easy...

Also, what other maintenance items need to be addressed?
-Brake fluid
-Chain adjustment
-Air filter
-trans fluid

Any other basic maintenance items I missed? I know the guy drove the bike pretty hard, just don't know what I need to look out for. I do need a manual CCT as the buzzing is getting annoying already, but anything else? Thanks guys

Check the front fork seals/bushings, as I had to replace those on mine not too long ago.

That's my next project... not liking the sag in my forks lately...

florida f4i 06-04-2009 03:25 PM

I noticed my right one was leaking, so I figured it was way overdue.

It wasn't hard at all, really, the most difficult part was hoisting the bike up in the air so there was no force on the front (and you could remove them).

We ended up using our neighbors stairs and created a lift out of a jack handle and two chains wrapped around the frame (which were wrapped in towels)

Worked beautifully.

I have some pictures on my phone, I'll have to try to find a way to post 'em up on here.

Costs me about 50 in parts to do an oil change using full synthetic and replacing the filter. I use Castrol R4, though I haven't been able to find it in 10w-40 so I may have to switch brands come winter.

I'm new to this whole fork thing...what would the symptoms for bad/worn bushings be?

http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/Consumables.html#Oil
Has all the info for filter cross referencing.

Check it out. At wallyworld you are buying a car filter that fits our bikes

Where is the cheapest place to buy oil? Walmart? Or like an autoparts shop? (advanced etc.) And I take the right fairing off, easier that way. What do you guys use to catch your oil though? I don't put it on the stands, and can't find something good and low.

10 qt. Oil Drain Pan

Usually get ours at Autozone- you don't need one that big, we do several bikes at once is all.

Jmclmorrow 06-05-2009 06:50 AM

local shop charges 70$ for just an oil change, or 150$ for a complete tune up (chain, oil/air filter etc.) but I refuse to pay someone 70$ for something that I can do at home in less than a half hour for 20$. You dont need to take the fairings off but I take the left fairing off because 1, my oil pan is my car oil pan and to tall to fit under there with the fairing off and 2, because its so quick and easy to do and creates so much more room.

cman9toes 06-05-2009 06:58 AM

oil I get from wally world and oil pan that also stores it. I put my bike on a rear stand though.
walmart has a cheap pan that should fit under.

The one that I noticed was fork fluid leaking out, but there are a handful of other problems. I'd type 'em out, but I'm on my way out the door (someone else wanna jump on this? haha)

Something similar to this, but in green :p -

Of course, it's overkill, but I got it at work (Advance Auto), and my roomie and I use it on our cars, too, with room to spare.

Also makes it easier to sit underneath the bike, because it's not all that tall.

Rear stand helps, too, if anything it gives you more room and lets gravity do its job more efficiently ;)

thef4i 06-05-2009 10:45 PM

I used 10w40 after 2500-3000 miles and took off the right fairing.

lauren 06-08-2009 10:20 AM

Just a thought, but a friend of mine recently brought his bike to a shop to get the oil changed. The filter ended up coming off while he was going around a curve at a pretty good speed because it wasnt put on correctly. Its never good when the back tire gets soaked with oil, but he somehow managed to get it stopped without laying it down. Idk about you, but id rather do it myself so i know it was done right.
