They certainly did cheap out on the forks their's no Pre-Load, rebound or compression All you can therefore do is change the oil and check the springs.
At least you do get the spring adjuster on the rear shock, but no rebound or compression. The spring adjuster nominal setting is a 3, you probably want 5 or 6, do you have the C spanner?

Will forks from an older model fit? Straight swap? Yes I have a c spanner not the original tool kit though.

I also think if you go back to 2004 and before they had the fully adjustable forks in the UK.
Anything from 99 on is a straight swap

Maybe Ill look for another set, I only ride on the road and don’t plan on going on track, will there be a big benefit?

Not any major benefit, you would probably benefit more from an oil change in the forks as I would bet it has not been changed in the last 16 years!
