on the right hand control is the red switch that kills the fuel pump at least, i imagine it kills the ignition too. you flip this switch up and down..
if you have a red button on the left side, someone may have wired it to kill the bike for a second to switch gears like a quick shifter.
take a look at dynojet quick shifter styles you will see the push button one, used for organizations that don't allow quick shifters
