If you're squeamish about it, tighten it loose until you feel comfortable, run the bike, let it cool for 2 cycles and check for leaks.

thanks for your help guys. changed the oil this morning, hand tight on the filter (i'm guessin about 15 ft/lbs) and snug plus a quarter on the drain plug. no leaks
