New Wheels Installed - Front Calipers Pistons Not Retracting
I've got a strange issue that I can't seem to wrap my head around... so I bought new tires and had them installed on my rims and, I can barely even move the tire on the stands. After installing the tires the front tire will spin maybe 20 degrees at most when i use a lot of force. The pads are hugging the rotors very tight. A bit of information... I believe I may have squeezed the front brake WHILE the calipers were REMOVED from the rotor. I have tried to pry open the brake pads and used a c-clamp to press the pistons down. I have opened the front brake resevoir, and again pushed the pads into the pistons to push them all the way down. This caused quite a bit of brake fluid to push out of the resevoir, now it's not even showing up in the level indicator oops lol I've tried loosening the front 4 fork bolts, tightening the axle nut, and pushing down on the front end to correct the axle. I've tried riding around the block a few times.. didn't fix, and the rotor is too hot to touch after a 5-10 min ride. Spacers are on the axle I think there's a few other things I've mentioned but my brain is fried at the moment. Note... the pistons in the caliper seem to retract when I use a screwdriver/c-clamp with not that much force... so they can't be seized... I've been going through the forums on this matter.. and I've seen you reply quite a lot regarding this. I've not messed with the master cylinder yet.. (kind of scared tbh sounds scary)... I'm also not sure when the brake lines were last replaced... I haven't cleaned or rebuilt the calipers at all. Now with all that said, what's weird.. is that before I removed the tire, the brakes were NOT doing this. Now that the tire is back on, I must've done something wrong... why aren't the pistons retracting fully... I've never scratched my head so hard |
The reason I suspect that the spacers are in wrong is that it happened to me before when I used to let a shop mount my tires. It was fine when I brought it in, the changed the tires, and they were dragging so bad the the bike would barely roll when I left.
Yours was fine before you took off the wheel, but now there is a problem. Sounds to me like the same scenario. |

Yours was fine before you took off the wheel, but now there is a problem. Sounds to me like the same scenario. Does it matter which way you put them on as well? as in you can put it on the right side, but just backwards? (turned the other way around) |
Yes, it matters. They have to fit in the seal.
The one with the big flange goes on the right side (the side with the axle bolt) |

Another thing to add here.. please note that when the calipers are OFF... the wheel spins freely... not sure if that means the spacers were installed correctly.... or if it will still spin though the spacers are installed incorrectly, and without the calipers... but once the calipers are installed, all goes to shyt... lol

The spacers mixed will offset the wheel just enough that the rotor will bind on the pads.
They are round, so turning them 180 won't matter. |
