New bike and question (pics inside!)
 

Just picked up my bike this past Wednesday. 2002 F4i with 4300 miles.

I'm thinking about buying some gear to protect my legs, but I don't want to buy the heavy leathers (like my jacket) or reinforced jeans. I am thinking about getting some FOX motocross pants. I believe they're nylon and much lighter than the street pants. Not to mention, I think they look better.
I talked to the employee at the bike shop and he said he's heard of people using them on the street but they won't protect as well. What do you guys think? Have you heard of anyone using them on the street?

nice bike, looks super clean! As for the moto-x pants, they definitely wont provide as much protection as leathers or even riding specific jeans. Ive never seen or heard about anybody using them and they might look a little out of place but if you like them then go for it.

+1 for the minty bike... Good find.. As for gear i usually rock a pair of heavier jeans if not riding jeans and an icon field armor vest for the really hot days and a Joe rocket jacket for cooler days!

Motocross pants wont protect worth a shyt in a crash on the street (wasnt made for it either). Ever had nylon melted to your skin? Now think about that plus road rash ;)

Yeah man. If you want a lighter pair of pants for the street, look into textile pants. I've got the Icon Arc textile pants, and while they're a little poofy (think snow pants), they'll work much better. I'm sure some other brands are less poofy also.

Hey, thanks Aken for the pic. I like those pants a lot! The shop I went to actually didn't have anything that resembled those, but I'll have to look somewhere else.

I bought the bike on CL for $4000. There are some scrapes on the stock exhaust and a touch-up on the right fairing, but I don't mind too much. This is my first bike, so I won't be surprised if I drop it learning to ride.

I've done a lot of research, and some might say that $4k is too much. But I was looking for stock everything and low miles (hard to find!). And the seller was great, he threw in his almost-new helmet and brand new $300 jacket. He had a detailed history of the bike, and even drove it all the way to my house since I wasn't comf riding on the highway. I'm super happy about how everything went!

Yeah, great buy. Bike looks good. I wear jeans 90% of the time riding, but would never wear synthetic on my legs, cause I don't want it to burn in.

I'd highly recommend to wear full gear at all time. Too hot? Yes, probably. But you will be thankful if something happens and you go down. And on a bike you cannot predict when it's going to happen.
Helmet, gloves and jacket are mandatory in my opinion. Also it's great if you can get some shoes. Not only it will be easier to shift up, but also provide a great protection.
Don't want to advertise anything, just suggesting. The brands I'm using are Dainese (Italian brand, practically the best out there, although very expensive) and Icon. Just got a pair of pants from Icon and I can say that I'm not going to ride wearing jeans any more.

That's about it. Ride safe! And I'm assuming that you have taken MSF course already. If not, I strongly recommend.
