Is the chain stake point large/wide enough to flare the master link pins? It usually only takes a small flare to ensure the link plate doesn't come off, but you'll see the flare. Does the side link plate move when pried from inside?

The plate doesn't move no, but the flare piece I'm using is plenty big enough. I donno, I guess I'll find a new tool but the shop only has a d&d chain tool and they want 180 for it

are you pushing the rivets out of the other side of the chain? what rivet tool are you using? those definitely arent spread out. it only takes a few hundredths to get the rivet spread to proper spec but you can visually see if its good or not.
