Default Melted?!

Just noticed this "melted" area on the RPM dial. Can't think of anything I might've done to cause this, i.e. I've done nothing in that area other than dust/clean. It works fine but is rather disconcerting...

Any ideas?

Has it been in the sun? A friend of mine had an early 1000rr that had the clear windscreen magnify the sunlight to a point right on his cluster and melt it. Guess the sun hit it just right. Just because of him, I now cover my cluster with my gloves when parked.

Yes, but not any more than usual. That possibility did occur to me and, if it were summer, I could see it. I have a dark windscreen and the sun is certainly much less intense right now, so...

I suppose it is possible it occurred much earlier and I just now noticed, but I'm pretty good about checking things over on a regular basis. I hate unsolved mysteries!

I'll have to remember to start covering it with a cloth or something from now on. Thanks for the suggestion!

Not sure of how the needle is activated within the cluster but you could try having a feel around the gauge to see if any heat is being generated internally.
As you said, it might of been there a while and you just haven’t noticed it. We tend to look at the point of the needle harder than the cluster in general.
Right now, I couldn’t tell you what my dial center even looks like lol
Best of luck mate.

Never seen that on a F4i, but when I was a service writer at Honda basically the only thing we ever had go bad and get warrantied were gauge clusters from sitting in the sun.

Yeah, that's the only explanation that makes any sense, so that's what I'm going with!

Just so weird that it happened this time of year and not during the warmer months over the last 3 years...

Anyone know if there is a way to replace just the needle?

You trying to up the suspense? Lol.

What is the procedure?

Edit: Never mind, I found a write up for a 929 and could use that if I ever acquire a replacement!

Sorry about that. Basically I just dismantled my cluster and the needle pulled straight off using finger pressure. Be sure to note the position of the needle when you remove it or you will be troubleshooting why your bike isn't reading correctly. Don’t ask me how I know.
