Low mileage isn't all it's cracked up to be.
 

Bought an '05 f4i with 5k miles on it for my first bike thinking it would be a reliable, go anywhere anytime kinda bike. That's true until it gets about 20 minutes of heat soak and then it won't rev past 5-6k.

Finally opened it up to try replacing the fuel filter and found this. Apparently sitting for 13 years isn't good for gas tanks. Can't believe it was actually revving above 5-6k when it was cold. Hopefully once it's cleaned out and put back together I won't have to open her back up for a long time.

What would you replace? I've got the new fuel filter and the brillo pad thing but it doesn't look like I can get a new sock for the fuel pump. Trying to decide if I should get a cheap fuel pump that comes with the new sock filter or just clean this one out. I'm leaning towards just cleaning this one out. I'm already missing out on prime riding weather.

Wouldn't think twice , new pump and make sure the tank is cleaned out:)

Yeah, I've got the tank soaking with metal restore right now. Hopefully that'll work to get rid of the rust, that stuff is expensive :)

Give it a quick hit with some compressed air and it should be fine.


Just kidding. CaBaRet is spot on correct. Replace the whole thing and have peace of mind.

Yeah, you're right. Cheaping out and using the old pump is just going to bite me someday. New pump it is. Thanks guys.

Low mileage is great when units are newer. Eventually time wears things out more then mileage, as you've found. Hope you get to enjoy it eventually!

Yeah, I should have looked more closely when I was buying it. Ah well, lesson learned. Relatively easy fix I hope. On a side note check out how great this metal restore stuff works! Inside of the tank completely changed color from rusty to clean metal.

I didn't get enough stuff to fill the whole tank that's why this didn't get completely cleaned. I'm just flipping the tank over to get the bottom rust stripped off.

Can you please elaborate why servicing a pump is not a good idea? And what could explain the bike bogging once it is up to operating temperature and not cold?

I also have a bike that bogs once it is warmed up and I suspect FPR/Clogged Fuel Filter/Dirty Tank, hence asking.

Well for me it was about a pound of rust packed in tight around the pickup for the fuel pump as you can see in the pictures. I have no idea why it worked in the cold. I'm surprised that was the case.

Pull that junk apart and see what's in there! It's easy to get the tank up and the pump out, no reason not to take it out and look and see if you have a similar problem.

Because his pump was a giant ball of rust and almost nothing else judging by the pics we had, why in the world would you think "servicing" it would be ok?
