Looking at becoming a rider again :D
I had a 98 600F back a year or 2 ago, and I enjoyed it a lot! I just had to sell it but now I'm looking for another bike!
I am reading about an F4i... here is the ad:
My concern is how much a new 5th gear might cost... what could be wrong with it, and how much it will all cost. I do like that it comes with a new back tire, and helmet etc...
What would be a good price to snag this considering whats wrong with it. I have not gone and looked at it or rode it yet.

Gas tank is dented too, just called the guy.
He said I can have the bike for 2200
What's a worst case scenario? How much could this cost to fix?
He says all the other gears work fine, just not 5th... It jumps when you put it into 5th, but when you go up to 6th, its fine.

I agree w/ 74demon.
W/ the 5th gear situation, if you're truly interested in this bike... I highly recommend asking the owner to meet you at the local Honda shop for an inspection. You'll pay for it but it will help you best determine if the bike is worth buying at the current asking price & what its going to cost you to get it repaired.

When I look this bike up online, it sells for around 4-4500...
Could fixing 5th gear cost 2k? Can't I just drive it without 5th gear? Just skip it...?
He lives decently far from me, and the nearest Honda bike shop is even further in the opposite direction...
I called the Honda bike shop, and they said there is no way of knowing without them taking it apart to give me a quote...

Can you turn a wrench - i.e., do engine/mechanical work? If you can, then it might be a bike to consider. However, buying the bike simply b/c of the low cost alone w/o being able to fix the prob, isn't really a good idea in my opinion.
IMHO you'd be better served buying a good condition bike for more - than buying a problematic condition bike for less. Again, that's assuming you'd have to have someone else do the repair work.
"Skipping" 5th isn't a realistic option. You really should inspect & ride the bike to find out for yourself what the condition of situation really is.

I used to have an S2000. I turbo charged it myself, in my garage with jack stands... It sucked, but I did it.
I don't have much experience with bikes... I had a 98 600F but never had to do any mechanical work on it... only maintenance.
If I went and rode it, I wouldn't know what to look for... I have a local Honda bike shop that I can take it to to get it repaired, but I'd want to know how much it would cost before I go and buy it.
I can't spend much, I only have about 2200 saved up for the bike, and could spend a few hundred more on fixing it... I do have another car to get to work and what not while this one gets fixed, but I dont want to buy it for 2200 and then have to spend 2k more to fix it...

it would cost more than a few hundred to fix it, in rings and gaskets alone, which is recommended to replace when opening an engine up.
ask them how much it would cost to replace a gear, keep in mind this requires droping the engine from the bike.
the gas tank also cost $500+, i would imagine your total repair bill to be $1000-$1250, i may be wrong though, each gear is about $70 ea.
just figure 80 dollars an hour for however many hours it takes, and im imagining the top end has to come off so new rings at 27.33 a set would be great to replace as well, and some brake fluid cleaner to get carbon off
also make sure you can order parts and bring them in because they probably have a 200% retail, check out this site
