Is the original wiring harness for the tail light still there?

+1 Gotcbr

And, no, don't wire it staight to the battery, it needs a switch in-line somewhere.
Take a pic of your tail-section and post what you've got. Then we can help you out.
There should be some wiring in the current tail-section to splice into.

no the original wiring harness isnt there and i can just hook it up to the wiring thats plugged into the tail light??

Yes if you know which is the tail-light circuit, you can parrallel into it. Not the stop-light though, I'm talking the cruise light.

The license plate hot wire is the brown/black wire, use that for the positive side of your light. The solid green wires (there's either 3 or 4 of them) are the ground wires, just use one of them for the ground side of your light. Now your light will turn on/off with the key and there will be no need for wiring in a new separate light and fuse.

if you dont have factory colored wires back there anymore, use your running light wire for power, and ground for...well, ground.

You have the bracket that goes on the rear axle? If so then your plate is on the left side, correct? That's what I have. I got a license plate light from Cycle Gear with the double-sided tape on back. I mounted the light up in and on the rear-most part of the chain guard, then took a zip tie around the outside of the chain guard which makes contact with the light so to make sure the light stays in place. I ran the wires through the inside of the chain guard out of sight, all the way to the front and then jumped from there and wrapped around the frame up to the subframe and toward the back of the bike to the wire harness. I used good, sticky tape to hold the wires inside the chain guard, cleaned the guard really good first so the tape stuck with no problems.

Nope for now its on the right side due to my friend holding up the back end, but soon it will be on the otherside once I get some stands and I don't have a chain guard
