There was a post about fuel . . . . ya the ~ what gas do you use question. Well, it was asked how does one know for sure that you are actually getting the octane it says on the pump (i.e. 89, 91 etc.) Cause we all know they do enviromental testing but I was curious if they monitored this. So they were doing testing at the Shell across from my office today and I went over and asked

The "goverment" guys told me that it is verified, usually 2wice a year they do the gravity testing to make sure it's correct. They will also come test it if there is speculation it is different than what it says. He pointed out a sticker on the front of the pump *go figure* (white & red, at least here in cali) that certifies this exactly.

So, no one worry that your paying for 91 and you're getting 87

yeah, i can actually spread some useless knowledge on this subject. my ex-gf's dad is the gas station calibrator for the city i live in. he has to visit each and every station at least once a year to re-calibrate the pumps. that way you get one gallon when you pay for one gallon. another thing he does is the octane tests. he takes a sample (usually a couple of gallons) and takes them back to a state-run testing facility where they test the octane ratings for each holding tank under the ground. any speculation on octane fraud or watering of the gas and it's a quick call to the governmant agency over fuel distribution. these are probably the guys that you saw BeeJ. and yes, there is usually a sticker on each pump that is replaced when all the tests have passed.

Sharz, I know you're in the F4 section... but just checking to make sure what your ride, year and all.

And why you opt for the cheaper fuel?

I think we've went over this fuel thing before.

Does the manual say use 86 or 86 or higher? High compression engines perform and stay cleaner if you run higher octane levels. I guess it depends on how long you're going to keep the bike. Pay a little more for the fuel or pay for the repairs/cleaning the FI later.

i may be wrong, but i once heard that any vehicle sold in the u.s. had to be able to run on regular unleaded (86 or 87) gasoline. i personally run the highest octane available.
