Default Insurance rates for new riders!

Hi There,

I've been browsing around here for a few days and I'll like to say this is an awesome forum. It has (unfortunatelly? lol) fueled my obsession with sport bikes evenmore!I'm 17 and have my heart set on a used F4i because of its combiation of relativelly comfortable riding position, gorgeous looks, and good performance. I will be honest and tell you guys that I have zero ridin experience at all, but am very aware of the dangers involved and planning to take every precaution possible (training/gear/starting in the parking lot etc.) Being 17, I know I have alot to lose, and starting on a 600 is maybe not the ideal choice, but I also don't wan't something that in a few months I will be bored with. To get to my question, I was shocked last night when I searched for online insurance quotes that it would cost me over $9000 a year for liability only in Alberta, Canada. I was sure that it wasn't so expensive because from posts that I have seen here, most people's insurance is under 200 a month? How is it possible that mine would be around $9000? Is that really realistic? If that is thecase it looks like a Kawasaki 250 may be my first bike after all... Sorry for the long post and I thank you in advance for your help!

That's outrageous!!!! I pay $360.00 a year for full coverage... That is almost a brand new bike a year. You might want to shop around and ask for discounts for safety courses, etc. Hopefully some of our Canadian brothers can chime in but man that is some crazy ****...

Well I'm 17 and have only had my car license for 6 months, on top of the fact that I have zero motorcycle experinece. So I know for sure my rate won't be that low, but let's say even up to $3000 a year I could afford.. but definitelly not 9000! Hopefully someone got their bike at a young age and will be able to chip in!

yea thats what everyone at the dealer said when i got the bike. They said dont even bother looking if you dont have state farm insurance. I pay 800/year full coverage. Everyone else wanted more than the bike cost which is just rediculous. Good luck with the insurance and i know lots of ppl that started on a 600 bike with no experience. Just take it to a lot or an industrial park till u get comfortable with it.

I got quoted at $507 a week ago, in NJ through progressive(they dont directly insure NJ motorcycles, but my main auto insurance(USAA) has a deal with them, therefore they will insure in NJ

i only have liability because im only 20 so im pretty young too and full coverage i was quoted at like 2000 a year for full coverage and i live in an apartment so that makes full coverage higher, but i only have liability and its about 75 a month for me, so what u got quoted is insane

Yeah thats a crazy quote, I am 21 and mine is 66.00 a month for liability, because I figure if I crash my bike its going to be #1 totaled or #2 cheaper then my deductible would be so...
