How many links on a chain?

This is probably a very noob question, i'm sure, but i'm changing my chain and sprockets. I have a 120 link chain, and a 15 front sprocket and a 48 rear sprocket. My chain is OBVIOUSLY much longer than it should be, so how many links should i cut off? I was in the HowTo section, and saw an awesome instructional How To, but didn't mention cutting more links off. Any advice? This if for an 01 F4i. Thanks!

Just wrap the chain around your new sprockets using the back of the rear sprocket as the meeting point and you'll see exactly how many extra links there are.

Dremel tool those suckers off.

Thanks guys, i was hoping to get a specific count, but i guess just measuring it will do the trick, and yea i hate the Dremel tool, but that's what i'll be using.

Stock for the F4i is 16/46 w/ 108 link chain.

What were the sprocket sizes that you took off? If they were 15/48, then count the number of links on the old chain & there's your answer.

If you are going to 15/48 from stock, you may need longer than 108.

Move your chain adjusters fully forward (new chain setting), place new chain on sprockets. At 108, see if you have enough slack (at least 1") in chain adjustment, to install. If so, you're good to go. If not, move to 110 & measure again. If you're good at 110, there's your answer.

Good luck w/ your install.
