Default How hard is this to do?

I have an '05 F4i in dark red, and I am considering swapping out the tail and getting rid of the 1-piece banana-seat and going to a pair of seats with a cowl over the rear seat. I rarely if ever have a passenger, and when I do I can just pop off the cowl.

Now, I am looking to do this the easiest way possible, of course. Is it possible to buy the part already painted the right color? Or do I have to buy the bodywork and then go find a place to match the color and paint it?

What exactly is involved here?

I did the exact thing to my bike. I got the seats, subframe, passsenger pegs, rear tail and undertail off ebay and had the tail painted, undertail came painted. I could not find a fairing already painted to match our bike, but you may be able to search better. Good Luck

Yeah, your bike was what prompted me to consider this. Looks great.

What was the total cost of all that, and what exactly would I need?

I really am not too concerned about the undertail. I already did exhaust, PCIII USB, regeared, Speedo-Healer, integrated tail lights and modified the existing undertail, double bubble screen, tire hugger, and a couple other small things.

So all I really want is the new tail. What's the absolute minimum that I need to pull this off?

You are going to need these from bike years 01-03:subframe, tailight, passneger pegs, seat latch, undertray. I think that is it. I spent around $650, that is tail and paint, undertail painted with LEDS, passneger pegs, seats, subrame, latch.

I'm not judging here, just truly asking...

If you disliked the "banana" seat on the new F4i so much why would you buy an "01-03 model instead? Other than the tail these bikes are identical. There are low mileage "01-03 bikes out there that you could get for a lot less than what you've spent in total to convert your new bike. If you don't like the colors on the older bike, I would still think it would be cheaper to get it repainted.

Just wondering.

This is my first street bike and I wanted a brand new one. When I first got it, I just wanted to ride it. Now I want to ride it and modify it. Thanks for the comment.

I wanted a new bike as well. And on this, I was just curious if it was cheaply feasible, if not, I won't bother.

just get the targo seat cowl to cever up the back and it looks good, then pull it off for a rider. I know someone has that cowl but i dont remeber who, its what inspired me of doing it that way instead of changing everything since i just put a fender eliminator and intregated tail light on. Cwl is like 200 bucks
