Get ready for a monsoon of beginner questions...

So I'm going craaaaazy waiting for my undertail to get here :icon_hyper:

I've been reading up on some undertail installation threads around here. I'll have my own questions, but I'll ask some now to get an idea of what I'm getting into.

The battery has to come out, yes?

The thin black box on top of the battery, what do we call that?

Will I unbolt/remove the entire stock undertail? Or will I be keeping a part of it (to hold the battery) and overlapping with the undertail? This would mean cutting with a dremel correct?

I'll try to keep stupid questions to a minimum, I have worked on cars and dirtbikes and what not before so I have some level of mechanical inclination. Thank you everyone! :icon_rally:

The undertail was already on my bike when I got it...but looks like you could leave the battery tray in-place for cutting (unless you are worried about cutting into the subframe). I'm not sure you would need to pull the battery...unless you are removing the whole battery tray.

If I remember I'll snap a pic of mine when I get home tonight.

That would be greatly appreciated, I'm not exactly sure what/ where I need to cut

I added the pics to my facebook...until I can get them over to here

undertail install

check out that link. this should be pretty similar to undertail. from my understanding an fender elem or undertail you are just basically modifying the back section of the tail tray. I know i have seen other post with more information about undertails.

This is what was cut on mine.

the link in the above post is actually pretty good and will get you to the right place for that undertail install

Vegas has some good pics and a bit of an explaination in his build thread.

The box above your battery is the ECU. So don't break that. :D

Most undertail installs tell you to cut the back end of the stock undertray and then the undertail panel overlaps it. That way you keep the battery tray and the storage compartments in the tail.

Ahhh okay so if I cut along the yellow line as shown in the $10 undertail link I will be leaving most of the stock plastic in and just overlapping with my undertail, yes?

This is how my tray was cut

Okay that makes sense that way. But...

Is it hard to fit the tail back on with the 1/8" (or whatever it is, just a guess) of black plastic that is the stock undertail (the part that fits against the subframe) PLUS the thickness of the new undertail?

The stock undertail (again, whatever you want to call it) curves up into the tail while my new ACTUAL undertail is more level/ actually slightly dips down towards the tire. So If I were to cut the stock black plastic out (all except battery box) there would be a massive space under my passenger seat. But there would be no holders and everything would slide to the bottom. I don't really like the idea of having the old black plastic in there (stock) if I don't need it. Is there anything wrong with cutting it out all the way to the battery box? (given that I leave enough material to overlap slightly so there are no gaps)

I know there were more questions but I forget :icon_doh:
