Fuel pump gasket leak

Fuel pump gasket leak
Well I replaced my CCTL last night and decided to take my fuel pump out of the tank to try to find the fuel filter. After I located the filter and called for prices on a new one I decided to put the pump back in and wait a while longer before I changed the filter. I put the pump back in the tank the same way it cam out, and tightened the mounting nuts according to the pattern in the manual. I didn't have a torque wrench handy so I kind of guessed the 9 ft. lbs. it was supposed to be at. Now I have a leak at the bottom part of the gasket that is closest to the back of the tank. It's a pretty moderate drip but it only happens when I tilt the tank back at a 45-60 degree angle. Any suggestions on fixing the leak problem?

RE: Fuel pump gasket leak
I was afraid of the new gasket thing...It says 9 ft. lbs. in the manual but I thought they felt a lot tighter when I took them off. I'm almost positive it's coming from the gasket because when I dry around the area it was leaking and hold the tank at an angle with all the other holes plugged I can see it start to get wet around the area then it just starts dripping. I have some red RTV sealant, do you think the gas would eat through that?

RE: Fuel pump gasket leak
Well I just talked to a friend that works on bikes a lot and he said that the gasket has to be replaced because they're impregnated with sealant and once you take them off they must be replaced. Now the bad news is that no shops in town or even in the next town have any of the gaskets in stock and they have to be ordered. A whole week of downtime when the weather just got nice here... [:@] Anyone know any good online places to buy stuff like that??

RE: Fuel pump gasket leak
www.ronayers.com you are no. 20
i torqued mines to 12 ft lbs because i can do that...ahahh...no leaks, etc. have you tried torquing it down a bit more? you should replace it eventually but this may give you a window until the part arrives.

RE: Fuel pump gasket leak
Well I finally found a new gasket that someone had in stock. It was at a shop out of town...about an 80 mile round trip. It's all installed and the nuts were torqued to 12 ft. lbs. No leaks so far so hopefully I'll have it all back together after I get out of class tomorrow![sm=icon_cheers.gif]
