Front wobble under braking / Wheel Gap
 

Hey All, recently bought a 2003 F4i which was in a front-end crash.


Bought new brake rotors and new forks on ebay, installed them.


Bike rides perfectly straight and no vibrations until I press on the front brakes, then it vibrates like crazy.


I looked at the wheel and it appears that the GAP between the brake rotors and the fork on the RIGHT SIDE is smaller than the GAP on the LEFT side of the front wheel.


Is this normal? Or is the gap suppose to be identical on both sides? Anybody got a photo?


Will this cause the vibrations I'm experiencing?


The head/yolk appears to be perfectly straight, so I don't know whats causing this.

Are your spacers on the correct sides?
Is your front wheel bent?

Is the steering bearings tightened to spec? Push in the brakes and rock the bike back and forth to detect free play in the steering stem. Another propable cause is/are warped brake rotor(s)

Ok, so here is what I tested:


1- held front brake, rocked bike front to back and side to side, no play at all on the head bolt up top, no clunking, no noise.


2- as for spaces, big one is on the LEFT side (facing bike from front) and smaller one is on RIGHT side.


3- wheel appears to be straight as I have NO wobbling at all, even at 90 mph, until I touch the brakes, then all hell breaks loose.


4- I put a bolt right where the caliper attaches, then I free spun the wheel, on both sides. The bolt is long enough to ALMOST touch the brake rotor. While rotating the wheel, I can see that the gap between this bolt and the rotor does not change at all, which would tell me these rotors are not warped. Am I correct?


5- the puzzling part is that the gap between the rotor and the fork is different on each side of the wheel. Can you guys tell me if this is per design?

I know a guy who had an 03 also front crashed , had one of his forks bent a little , check your forks for a bend

Since you mentioned new and ebay together, I'm assuming you either bought cheap crap parts or you bought new to you but used OEM parts. Its its used oem parts the answer is 99% most likely warped rotors. Bent fork is a possibility but you'd feel it other then just when braking. If its new cheap parts like aftermarket rotors, then that's likely the problem. Chinese ebay crap is a plauge on earth.
