I believe its section 13 of the factory service manual. There are pics & info there. Basically, you're checking "straightness" of the tubes.

You use a micrometer to test how out of round the tube is. You should have a shop do this for you as you don't seem to know how to do it and everything is measured in thousands of an inch [.001]

Do not use your bars as a guide to see if everything is straight, square up you top triple tree as much as possible and then look at your front wheel to see if it looks straight, it could very well be as simple as your bars being off. Did you hit anythong with the front tire, or did your bars touch the ground? It's sounds like it could be a serious bend you should be able to see, POP your bars off and look down the tubes if its a major bend you'll see it, otherwise take it in to have a run out done.

Does anyone have a rough estimate of how much it'd be to take it to a shop to look at it?
