Default Flame, popping and gas smell

I have read many posts for these conditions. I believe I have a bad Fuel Pressure Regulator. My bike has all 3 symptoms. My bike did this last year before I tore it apart for the winter and replaced some things. It is still doing it. I replaced the plugs, filter, remapped my pc3 and it still happens. I think the FPR would be my next thing to replace. Whats your guy's opinion and is there anything else I am missing. The bike is a 2003 cali model, 32,000 miles, power commander, K&N (brand new), spark plugs (brand new), M4 high mount exhaust.

Thanks in advance for your help

Alex i will let you know as soon as I get some good opinions.

Nakedcivic, the flame is cool but my bike doesnt run the greatest and the backfire is getting annoying. If it was a pure race bike then I wouldnt want to get rid of it!

That is exactly what my bike was doing. The little catalytic converter was glowing red on the outside. Not good. It kinda gets worse, the longer you let it go. I replaced the FPR and everything was groovy. I did all the stuff you did too, power commander remap, new plugs, new coil packs. All did nothing.

ssweetbro,
Thanks for the help. I will replace the FPR here in about 2 weeks or so. Do you know if you can remove the catalytic converter? I live in oregon and dont have any requirements for it. Also how long would you say it take from start to finish to replace the FPR?
Thanks Again

Well, I dont really know if all the bikes have it. It is a bulge in the stock pipe, right in front of the muffler. Anyway, it is not removable. It is part of the exhaust. You can simply put on a slip on, and then you are all good. The fuel pressure reg? I would say, 2 hours or less. Fuel can get all over, so you have to be a little careful, but it could also take less time if you are handy with tools. It is not tough.

Do you need to remove the throttle bodies to replace the FPR?

Just prop up the tank and open the fuel cap to vent the tank and minimize gas leakage. No need to remove anything else, shove lots of rags under it before you start to un bolt, because leaking gas is part of the process. 8mm bolts i think?

Make sure you are using a NEW O-ring and it's seated correctly on the new FPR. Have a ball point pen ready to shove/plug up the fuel line once you take it off the FPR or you'll have quite a bit of gas pouring out. Takes 20 mins if
your handy.

How to: replace FPR Writeup

Sick,
Sounds like it should be really easy. I appreciate all the help. Will update when I am done and hopefully the bike will run correctly.
