F4i undertail (pics and questions)

So.........what was meant to be just me going out to my bike to put a multitool into my back seat, turned into this:

While looking under the passenger seat I decided to tear down into the undertail as the previous owner installed it. The undertail is a EuroBike GP undertail. They no longer make them and are pretty rare, I have only seen about 3 others.
I cleaned up much of the wiring and at least now I know exactly what is in there. That being said, the tail light running/brake light bulbs are 1157's, see below:

Has anyone changed out their tail light bulbs for led's? From what I have read there are direct 1157 replacement led's. I get a mixed review of the change though, as some people say they are brighter, others so the opposite. Any thoughts?

Also, on the wire harness that connects the 2 brake/running lights there was this which was not plugged into anything and was just wrapped in electrical tape:

Any idea what this is?

Check out superbrightleds.com They have very descriptive information on LED lights. What you want to look at is lumens. I've ordered from them before, they have quality lights and excellent service .Just looking at the way your lamps are set up, I'll bet LEDs will work good.

the LED's on my bike when i got it are kind of shotty. they are dim but still work. i ordered a new set of led smoked taillight for 40 dollars. right now they look good i still have to put it on though lol

Well word to the wise after some research and testing there are not too many brake/running light less that are better than your conventional incandescent bulb.

You have to have a specific housing in order for the led's to be brighter than regular bulbs. Im scratching switching out my taillights for led's. Even with my brake/running lights being 2 circles, its safer to have regular bulbs.

I have decided my new project will be installing HID's.

Also, morning BUMP for what the hell that extra plug is...?

Had to look it up in the service manual, but that's your license plate light connector.

Thanks for looking that up. Do you by any chance know what page it is on?

I have a pdf version and I couldn't find it in there....

Thanks again.

The aftermarket factory-like housing f4i tail lights with LEDs are very intense. I have an untertail that retains the factory tail light, I use a smoked LED tail light and I assure you it is extremely bright.
