F4i Undertail Install HELP

Hello everyone, long time lurker here - love the site.

I have a somewhat general (probably stupid) quesiton, if ive posted this in the complete wrong spot in this forum, plz forgive me.

I have recently purchased a fiberglass undertail from MotoFairings.com (see attached) and have no idea where to cut the existing black plastic undertail fairing... I know i have to leave the battery tray section of the fairing but not sure if everything else south of that needs to go. Ive been staring at this thing for a week now wondering if i can keep the majority of this original tail section with the tool storage area up underneath the solo seat etc or if everything but the battery box/tray needs to be cut away. Anyway if anyone has any experience on this procedure for the split seat (2002) model f4i that would be fantastic.

Thanks all,

Sommes

I have done one of these but on a gixer, the only advise I can offer is take everything off you need to and offer the under tail up and try to mark out what or if the original rear mudguard needs to be cut, if you have marked it allways cut to little away and trim again as required if you cut to much first time you wont be happy, or make a cardboard template up of the undertail to see where and how it fits before you cut anything,

Thanks wheelnut, I ended up reading from somewhere that you had to cut like 3/4 of the entire rear fender off for an undertail install which i thought seemed a tad drastic and at that point i wondered how you would support the battery tray with doing that...

Once i came across this picture it got me started and was SPOT ON. My issue was i kept searching for something on this forum instead of really digging on the web and thus found this pic.

Undertail fit perfect with trimming exactly what this pic shows.

Thanks agian for the tip though.

Okay got it done... Quality seemes not too bad, LED's seem pretty bright (in the garage). Im happy overall with the way it came out.

Wow, that looks pretty sharp.. nice work.

How much did that setup run you?

Undertail was about $150CAD shipped - wiring was labeled nicely and unit came with plastic clips to attach to factory OEM holes in rear tail section.

Plate holder and bolt LED's were around another $25CAD shipped and had to drill holes to mount in new undertail.

All were ebay buys... I will have to wait and see how everything will hold up but I think it'le be good

The only thing I wonder is how well it will stand up to rocks & debris ... i cannot find a decent looking rear hugger for this bike to save my life (and that isn't $200 + )

Nice work. The undertail is on my list also.
