You need a voltmeter or 12v test light. The battery cable goes to a solenoid, then on to the starter. The circuit from the switch joins the two together and the starter turns.

Look for battery voltage on both terminals. The starter side terminal will only have voltage when the button circuit closes the circuit. There may be a fuse on or inside it. Check that too. Mine has one on the solenoid that the 4 pin connector has to be removed to see. Don't confuse it with the spare in the rubber holder.

just pulled the timing cover on the right side to crank the engine by hand, tried turning it in neutral and it's locked tight, can't move it even the slightest bit .. safe to say it's done? A buddy of mine said if the stator went in wrong that could have to do with it but I'm not sold

If the stator is hitting the rotor, then it will bind.

Take off the stator cover and try to turn the motor over.

update: stator still on bike however when I went to try cranking by hand again at the timing hole, I was able to get it moving with some decent force but there was still a good amount of drag, plugs are out , what's my next plan ? Continue cranking by hand to get the pistons moving?
