F4i no longer runs after crash
So my 04 F4i no longer runs after a nice spill on my own damn block.
Long story short I lost my rear end, bike went down on the left cracked my stator , stator cover AND my case right behind the stator. Oil and coolant leaking all over, pick it up roll it back to my house and so begins my rebuild. Case was fixed with jb weld that's held so far , granted I haven't gotten the bike to start since the accident. stator replaced , stator cover replaced. Figure awesome she'll start right up, nope. Key in, dash lights up, bike in neutral, kick stand up, clutch in, hit starter *click* , one click, dash goes out and stays out as long as I hold , pops right back on as soon as I let go, repeat the process. So i do my research, f4i's tend to get hydrolocked when they sit on its side (was only about a minute AND the tip sensor triggered which cut the engine) , not likely but a possibility. Great lets pull the plugs , and hit the starter to get it to puke the oil out of the spark plug holes. Nothing. Same deal *click* Ok maybe it sounds to be starter related, check the relay and jump it to see if I get it to trip, it does. Ok great now I figure it's my starter motor , pull my starter motor, take apart, clean it up, put it back together , attach it to a battery to check motor runs absolutely fine. Rear wheel spins free in neutral, TONS of drag if in any gear even with clutch pulled in. at this point only thing I could imagine is a seized engine , completely out of ideas , help guys!! |
Well I'm not much help but my first guess would be something electrical since you mentioned the dash going out and coming back..
It would be really weird if the motor seized, but you could try hand cranking the motor to see. |

How exactly would I hand crank it? Ratchet on front sprocket nut with clutch pulled in?
put in neutral and turn it clockwise (I think it's 17mm) it should turn with some resistance and whoosh sounds, if it's locked you won't be able to hand turn it Again it would be really odd if the motor locked... but at least you can rule it out |
The dash going out when the relay engages in normal. It's supposed to do that.
the easiest way to turn the motor is to put it in gear and roll bike. If it's on a stand, put it in 2nd or 3rd gear and spin the tire. |

All you have to do is take the timing hole cover off on the right side, you'll see something like this B0A2DE48-77E8-4A16-AC1E-9EA423804CDC-6306-0000053BF8367731.jpg Photo by Bawlzout Photobucket

The drag is the motor turning. Plugs out should be easier. If it didn't turn at all, I'd be worried.
