Default A discussion on service manuals.

I am not asking for answers for these questions, I am thinking maybe others have though the same thing.

But.. Why is it that a service manual will give you extra steps, or tell you to remove things that are not exactly necessary to remove? Telling you to take parts off the engine, that are not absolutely necessary to the said process. Then it tells you "Install new gasket" They must get paid from the manufacturer for all the parts they help sell.

Two things in particular are the thermostat housing which is not required to be removed from the engine and the oil filter and oil cooler.

I guess the filer/cooler could be damaged when removing the engine from the frame, but it makes me wonder how many things ive done per what the manual said that I really did not have to do.

It is better to design for stupidity than to assume people are smart. If they didn't put that "new gasket" note in and some idiot reinstalled a totally FUBAR gasket they would get sued for the cost of the damage. Since they tell you to put in a new gasket everytime their asses are covered.

Same goes for unnecessarily removing items. If they make you take everything off they're covered, while some people are still smart enough to think for themselves and not remove it.
