Easy way, pull the cams out since you are there already & do a leak down. I don't see it bending valves as I have done the exact same thing with no problem. You just have to start your timing process all over again. If you used the starter to turn the engine over then maybe. You would have to force the crank around by hand & would know something was wrong. Pull the cams out & do a leak down.

I had considered a leak down. That would require plugging the header and the 3 remaining intakes, and use one. Is that correct? If so, what would you use to plug them?

You don't need to plug anything up. You have to redo the cam timing anyway so just pull the cams out. Once the cams are out all the valves are up. Line up the "T" mark for cylinders 1&4 TDC, turn the crankshaft 180* to the other index mark for cylinders 2&3 TDC & do your leak down on those cylinders. The recommended max is no more than 10% leakage per cylinder. You will have some leakage past the rings. Listen to the exhaust pipe & the throttle body for leakage. You will noticeably hear air flow if the valves are bent. If no leakage is heard the valves are not bent. Redo the cam timing & have a good day. I use zip ties to hold the chain on the cam sprockets. Just an idea.

If you turned it over by hand you should've been able to feel if the valve hit the pistons or not. Even so i cant imagine it would do any damage simply hand turning the motor.

Don't the cam sprockets have markings to show the timing is matched?

Now this guy might have some valve leakage problems.....

Nice talk-through 96. I haven't done it enough to describe it all, but done enough to
recognize a good description. ;-)

well I came back out today and the cams were already in from the last time I touched them. Rechecked all the clearances and they are all in spec. turned the motor over several times by hand. landed on TDC with "in" and "ex" horizontal to the case.

have proceeded to install everything but stuck on two vent hoses that come off the case, right below the throttle bodies. One on each side. does anyone know what they connect to?

thats what I believe, but the nipples on the air box are sealed, not through passage, which I find weird.
