clip-on users wanting a stronger/better bar. . . .
long story short, my right side bar was tweaked to breaking point when my bike was knocked over while parked on the street.
so I decided to make my own bars, with a slight mod. to the originals. I used a 7/8" solid bar of 6061 aluminum. cut an inch longer than the stock length, mine measured 11." I then rounded the ends with a 1/2" radius, both ends. Yes I also drilled the 1/4" deep inset hole to hold the mechanisms by the grips. Final outcome being what I now proudly display on my bike. Note: I added the extra inch of solid 7/8" material to act as a one piece bar end. I have been considering making a handful of set of these for fellow clip-on users. Your cost is just about the same as the stock hallow 7/8" aluminum bars. Only these are solid equaling stronger in case your bike is layed down. I am also in the process of CNC Lathing the same bar with a larger outter diameter bar with a knurl on the radiused bar end. Again ONE PIECE, SOLID |
Cool thing to make for yourself. I prefer the separate bar end look, that's my only complaint. Otherwise pretty cool! How does it handle vibration? Do you feel a difference?
For your next version, I'd definitely recommend against a larger one piece outer bar end. Reason being, the simple task of swapping a grip involves disassembling the entire clip on. |
vibration wise; I rode this morning to work in Canoga Park from Glendale wearing my gloves and with my gloves on I couldn't feel a difference. Yet without gloves a day or so ago I do believe there was a slight change in vibration; but in all honesty nothing to really notice unless you are paying attention to it.
I know I feel my front end is stronger and handles better, but maybe that is just my mind set. and yes a friend at MotoDC in Burbank also advised me of the same factor in going bigger diameter for the bar-end thanks for reply. Also yesterday picking up my bike, I saw a universal license plate / turn signal bracket, very simply design... so simple in which I am writing the program to make my own, slightly modified though. lol |
