checking valve clearance
 

hi

my 01 has now done 16500 miles and I've been told I need to have the valves checked - does anyone know how big of a job this is? I've searched through the how to section but can't find anything there - very surprising! Any help would be really appreciated.

It is a pretty involved process. Not to mention you'll need at least $100 worth of tools you probably don't have. My local shop quoted me around 2.5 hours but I don't trust them.

Im closing in on the 16,000 mile mark but not looking forward to this whole process until the valvetrain starts making some racket...

I've heard that these bikes hold their valve clearance very well, and very rarely need to be adjusted at 16,000 miles, and probably only need to be looked at every 32,000. That being said, I, personally only have a few thousand miles on my f4i and have absolutely zero experience adjusting the valves.

What the average cost of this?

My F2 was at around 52,000 miles and the clearance was in spec. Spend your time riding... Hondas are built to last.

thanks, so is it worth doing. My local quoted just under £300 to check and replace if needed. What's the damage if I don't check and something is wrong?

I had mine checked at 21k and all were tight. i was charged £246 which included 4.5 hours labour and 14 new shims. imo its not worth the risk of F**king up your engine if you dont get it checked especially if you are not the first owner and have no idea how its been treated.

noted, thanks. think I'm going to hold off till 18k and let it warm up a little before I service it myself. Prob going to let the experts sort the valves, it's looks a bit complicated for me! Any experts in London who want to give me a quote? !!

my 01 had 16,500 on it when I checked valves. all were in spec. one or two were close to the service limit. I am approching 21,000 and I am thinking I will check them again just for peace of mind. But its a HONDA so Im sure its still OK
