Don't bother worrying about a locking mechanism. Just install an auto opener like this...

Here is the Hotbodies undertail I got on eBay for like $60 for my candy red 2005. It came plain white and I painted it black with a spray can.

Not exactly cheap, but it came complete with the plate holder, LED lights and all the wiring. Took a bit of cutting with a dremel, but installed quite nicely.
