Changing the shift light?
 

So I've come across an interesting dilemma. I know my shift light works. When I turn on my bike the light 'tests' ok. However, when I'm tucked and coming up to redline, I never see the light come on. And then it becomes, "Yes, I'm going to stare at my speedo while going to redline in ANY gear just to make sure it's working." I was wondering if there is a way to replace the light with a much brighter light. Maybe a directional LED? Any body know what kind of light it is?

Im sure you could do anything you wanted, just have to find out how much power is going to it tap into the wire and mount a larger shift light. Shouldn't be that hard.

For some reason this had me lol'ing all over the place.

For 01-03 (the ones I've worked on), it's really an Over-Rev indicator. You need to go to or exceed red-line to make it come on (it is set to come on at 14,200 rpm, which was red-line). Not sure about the 04-06, but it's probably the same.

Rode a buddies 2001 F4i and it was definately an Over-Rev indicator; same as on my 2003 600RR.

take your bike, put it in neutral, and hold it full throttle for 5 seconds. does your 'shift light' work?

Man - I didn't even know that light existed. Evidently I don't drive my bike real hard...

^It's not that. I can ride mine hard, and never have the light come on.

I can run mine till the rev limiter kicks in and still dont see the light come on. If you NEED a light to tell ya when to shift, then you better start looking for an auto-matic, like my dads 4 wheeler. lol

Yea I didn't either, I just thought that was some fancy fastener. One day I was running my bike hard down the interstate and noticed it come on. *Oh!*:icon_doh:

I hear your, as I am on the same boat. I did test the LED and it is pretty much imposible to see it during the day. At night, you will see it, only if you are paying attention to it, which means that the road does not have your devoted attention.

There are shift/rev lights out there, but they are quite expensive. I actually bought a Gizmo light, and returned it right away, as the light output wasn't much better than the stock led.

As of now, I am torn between buying this one:

Or soldering 5-8 LEDS, and tap them to the LED on the instrument cluster. From what I've seen, you will have to open the instrument panel, and solder a wire to the shift/rev LED. It is not as easy as taping into an external wire :icon_doh:
