Default Changing my own oil..

Well I just cracked 1000 miles on my 05 CBR f4i. I had the dealer do my first service at 500miles and they charged me $168.. SO I went out and bought the oil the filter and seal ring.. What else do I need for the 1000 mile service? Also any tips on changing it myself as I have never serviced my own bike.

Very easy. I took off the left fairing just to make it easier, plus it only takes a second. Take out the drain plug, and then pull the filter. Should take 20 minutes. Then just put in your 10w40 honda gn4 4 stroke oil, and you're good to go. Don't use a fram filter, use the honda.

168 is one hell of a rip off. Once you do it yourself you're gonna kick your own *** for paying someone almost 200 for 5 minutes of simple "work" [:'(]

But don't you have to let them service it to keep the warranty valid?

Just take your time its pretty simple, you don`t want any silly mistakes like forgetting to put the sump bolt back in before you try and fill it with oil. (yep i`ve done it)
It`s litterally bolt out filter off let it drain,
bolt back in torqued up
filter ring oiled
filter on n torqued up
then fill up to specified level
Job Done.

no u don't have to let them service it to keep the warranty....as long as u keep all documentation of the oil and filter(reciepts)...they have to take it as they service the bike...plus on the back of the honda oil it state "warranty will not be affected"

Wow. $168? Yikes. Give me 3.5 quarts of Honda oil, a Honda filter and a pack of Sam Adams Seasonal and that'll be all! Yikes. I paid $168 for my rear hugger.

Changed mine over the weekend as well, it was a breeze. I didn't even take the cowling off. I bought an oil filter socket for $3 bucks. Along with an extension on the ratchet I was able to change filters with no problems. I sure wish they'd just put in a dipstick that you can read when the bike is on it's kick stand though. Don't have a lift or anything, so putting the right amount of oil in was a little challenging.

It's a necessary evil.. I had them service my bike until I believe 5k... just in case there were any major problems with it. Warranty-wise. If you do it yourself and all the sudden you're bike has a faulty gear or clutch starts slipping.... $168 is a small price for a piece of mind. However, I just recently had a 12k service done on my bike, but basically all they did was check my work as the warranty is useless at this point. I changed the plugs, wires, chain & sprockets, brake lines, pads, just about anything you could think of. No matter what though I'm not perfect... maybe there's a gasket here or there... I just took the bike in and told them.. hey I need this service done and have done these things.. can you check it and do anything else it needs. You might be surprised at the easy response... then again they could whine...
