Default Chain Shortcut

I really don't want to have to buy new sprockets when I get a new chain because 1. I'm poor and 2. My sprockets look fine. Everyone in the world tells me get new sprockets except for my friend that works at a dealership. He says if you come in for a new chain they tell you that they have to get you new sprockets tires and a paint job. Any opinions?

You dont have to get new sprockets. They just say that because most of the time chains wear with the sprockets. If your sprockets look fine than just get a chain. They cant MAKE you buy a new set of sprockets because you are getting a chain. I have chained my sprockets once in 3 years and the chain 3 times. Dont ask me why 3 times, its my own fault anyways.

I have a bran new RK Gold Chain on my bike right now with the same set of sprockets I had on before and it works great.

depends on how many miles are on your sprockets.
when they get worn they are more rounded and can cause the chain to wear out quicker than it should.

as a general rule, switch both out at the same time, but it's not a must, as in nothing will blow up if you don't and will work just fine...only accelerated wear, but how accelerated? unless the sprockets are so rounded, i don't think it's that significant.

i just saw that you're from OC...hit up brian at sprocketcenter and beg him for a deal! he may hook you up mang! i get all my chain needs from him. he stand up dude. they're in HB. also, others recommend whatever chain, but i'll only go with DID...

Do it yourself and with the money you save you can afford new sprockets - typically the sprockets only add about $20-$30 extra. If you've truly worn out your chain then the sprockets are worn and they'll prematurely wear your new $150 - $200 chain.

if you replace your sprockets, def replace your chain. i wouldnt be too worred with a new chain if my sprockets were still well in tolerance.
