they really say to use gear oil? thats weird.
chain lube is what you want, they are all aound better than oil.
do it right and wipe down the outside of the chain of exess lube, you only want to lube the pivot points, it will minimize fling.
remove the fling with rubbing alcohol.

I usually clean my chain with WD-40 first (what the dealer recommended---works great to clean the chain). Wipe it dry, then spray on chain wax (Honda stuff or equal to it). Wipe off the excess chain wax (if you want to minimalize fling-off). I usually lube my chain up real good and leave a little excess. My chain looks bright white when I'm done. Usually the chain wax doesn't fling off too bad (if any) when I put it on in excess. I feel better knowing that I have more than enough rather than not enough.

That's my two cents on the matter.

I've read that it's best to lube a hot chain (right after the ride). That way it has a chance to soak in the rubber.

Anyone have suggestions on cleaning besides WD-40 and Kerosene? I want something that I can store and use when needed (aerosol maybe).

I found the following link to be very helpful. They should have all the answers you are looking for when it comes to cleaning/lubbing your chain. http://www.sportrider.com/tech/146_0208_geek/

Thanks, i noticed when the fluid comes out of the bottle, its fluid, but as it dries on the chain, it turns into this sticky substance. Awesome. thanks.

make sure you spray down into the chain, cause if you do it spraying from the outside in...its not gonna seep through the links because centrivical force will force it out...does that make sense?
