BUYING GUIDE F4i
Hi ALL, I ride a Blackbird but have a friend who is looking for his first 600.
He has his heart set on an F4 or F4i ( one piece seat model )
Apart from the usual items to look for on a bike - are there any quirks of the F4 or F4i we need to be keeping an eye out for when we go looking ?
Cheers

The F4 is carb'd...2000 was the last carb'd F4. Like any bike, w/ proper maintenance, carbs are easily maintained. Don't let that be a deterrent to purchasing an F4.
Both the F4 ('99-00) & F4i ('01-06) share a couple of issues. The CCT often will need replacing. It will start clicking & gradually get louder til replacement. The CCT can be replaced w/a new revised factory Honda automatic unit or aftermarket manually adjusted unit like the APE. If you can turn a wrench, you can easily replace w/ either.
Next, the R/R (Regulator/Rectifier) has been problematic in some F4 & F4i's. The R/R, like the CCT, was revised by factory Honda & can be replaced easily. Some owners choose to go aftermarket from Electrosport/etc, or install a unit from a dif bike manufacturer altogether. My orig R/R went bad a few yrs ago & I replaced it w/ the revised factory unit...& its been great ever since.
Both of the issues mentioned above have been spoken on in great detail here on the forum. You can read thru as much on the topics as you want.
Since you are a bike owner & have experience, you should be able to help look at the bikes w/ your friend & be able to spot any problematic issues. I recommend asking to have the lower fairings removed when you look at the bikes...they can hide a multitude of sins.
Good luck.

gotcbr - thanks - nice to know there are no major headaches to watch for.
Sounds like the 600 is just like the Blackbird - CCT and R/R are the two main issues.
I do all my own spanner work on the Blackbird and have changed to the FH012AA mosfet R/R on that along with the latest generation CCT.
Once we have him on an F4 or F4i I will get him to join the forum.
Once again - many thanks.

UPDATE - we looked at a few ( its amazing what tat gets described as excellent condition )
Settled on an F4 yr 2000.
Showroom condition, 17k miles, Lots of history paperwork.
Black/yellow colours, almost new tires.
Cam chain is quiet so CCT seems to be good at mo.
Charging voltages are good so battery and R/R also seem good to go.
Only mods seem to be braided hoses and stainless headers ( standard can fitted )
Rides well ( I had forgotten how much you need to rev a 600 compared to the Blackbird I have got used to )
Dealer will put new MOT ( inspection ticket ) on it and he collects it next weekend.
