Default Butt ugly holes

So I've put off installing sliders for 3 years now, but I'm definitely gonna do it this winter. I've read just about every post on the subject, and they all say pretty much the same thing, "Go ahead and cut them man, it's really easy,........use putty,........laser,.......etc". We've all read them.

What I was just wondering is, how many of you completely destroyed your fairing,or just ended up with one butt ugly holetrying to install a slider? (now be honest)

I installed sliders on mine...first time ever doing it. I used the laser method and followed the write-up on the forum. I am proud to say that mine are perfect...not even a 1/16 of an inch gap!

If you do mess up and cut too big, just goto Home Depot or your local hardware store and get some rubber plumbing grommets. Slide the grommets around the slider too the fairing. Doing this will conceal your error. I was planning on doing this to mine even if there was a small gap, I think it gives it a very clean look.

On another note, my buddy took his RR to a shop to get his sliders done (hes not to mechanically inclined!) They shop did such a bad job doing his that the hole isn't even a real circle, It looks like a small child took a razor knife and went to town!

Again if you follow this write-up by Kiggy 74 you will have no problems.

My friend got a shop to do his a while back and they screwed his fairings all up! Everytime I see his bike I cant help to crack a smile!!

I used the laser method also. Turned out perfect. But yes, it does make you a little nervous drilling through the fairing.

02cbrf4i4u, Nice job on the cuts! They look perfect. I would never trust a shop to do the job cause I'd be afraid they'de screw up like they did on your buddy's. I only hope mine come out as nice as yours did! It seems to me that the laser method is more complicated (therefore more room for error) than the putty method, but I could be totally wrong.

Not at all...the saler metod seems harder but it really is very basic. Just make sure that the bike or stand holding the laser dosent move AT ALL and your hole will come out on point. Just take your time and im sure yours will come out the same way!

Sorry I have a 954 do not have to drill anything. Just measure 2 or 3 times then cut.

i used sliders from oesaccessories.com and they offer an alignment guide with there sliders, that helps out alot with the finding center.
Its just a long bolt that threads into the slider hole to frame with a sharp tip. You put your fairing back on the bike, press the fairingagainst the tipand you have center.

I have heard of this method as well....I think a friend used it on his but scred it up somehow....now he has to use the grommets cause his cut has WAY off!

My main concern with eithermethod is that the same way that the laser must be exactly on the same horizontal and vertical axis as the mounting bolt, so must the drillbe on the same axis. The problem is that when you are drilling with the saw, the fairing isn't on the bike anymore and since it is curved it will be difficult to get the saw on the exact same axis as the mounting bolts (even though the pilot hole is spot on). I would think that if you drill a few degrees off the horizontal(or thevertical for that matter) even if the saw is placed correctly in the pilot hole the sliders won't line up perfectly.

Maybe I'm just being too ****. Obviously most of you got them perfect so it must not be that critical
