Default Bad oil???? Or bad shifting?

hey i was hoping for some input...i recently (390 miles ago) did an oil change and am now running Castrol R4 full synthetic. the thing is, its a 5w40 which i think is personally kinda thin considering most of my riding (until weekends) is around town, and no matter what theheck i do i cant shift smoothly for the life of me! the bike jerks and makes very loud noises when i shift no matter how smooth i try to be.....is it too thin of an oil for around town riding?? or is it that ive been riding dirtbikes for 18 yrs and am used to an mx gearbox?

seems to be adjusted fine, and i just cleaned and lubed it about a week ago...the thing that makes me mad is it seems notchy even at 7000 roms plus, which is USUALLY when it should be smooth [:@]

Maybe try being a little smoother with your left hand, lol.

My buddy said the same about my bike when he rode it. he thought it was the chain. I told him he had slow hands and closing the throttle all the way on upshifts make the fuel injection system get touchy. He tried and he agreed that you gotta be fast.

When I shift lazy, slowly, or at low revs my gearbox is clunky and noisy. The more aggressively (fast hands and feet with minimal clutch)I shift the better it sounds and feels. Maybe the thinner oil is making this situation worse, but i know after an oil change my bike feels better, not worse and I use 10w-40.

how many miles on the bike?

if u ask me... its the oil

i wouldnt suggest using fully syntheitc oil.. its super slippery and remember, what ever oil u put in there gets used by ur clutch too

i just rolled over 7k miles, i tried being a little quicker with my hand and it seems to be alot smoother but still a lil notchy.. i think i may try a different oil!! like i said i come from a long history w/ dirtbikes so a lot of it might be in my head

If you want shifting to be smoother you have to be smoother with your left hand, and slip the clutch a bit more. However, once you're past shifting from 1st to 2nd, it shouldn't be really notchy.
