Advice on purchasing a damaged 2004 CBR F4i
I am looking to purchase a damaged 2004 CBR F4i. The person is asking $900 for it. The major damage is that the owner said a rod got thrown while he was driving it. He also says there is a hole in the engine at the bottom. He started the engine up and it runs for a little bit and then shuts down. Also he laid it over earlier in the year and replaced the gear box. It has brand new tires and a scorpion exhaust. Also the instrument gauge needs to replace. The fairings have some scratches on them. I own a SV650 and have done work on it. Do all of mine own maintenance work and familiar with that engine and car engines. My questions are 1) Can I fix the engine without replacing the entire thing? I know I can with a car engine but motorcycle engines are a little different. 2) Is it worth it to buy it at the price, even if I do have to replace the engine? The rest of the bike looks great except for the engine. Please any help will be greatly apprecated. I want my next bike to be a Honda CBR, but I can wait.

When you say there a hole in the bottom of the motor then that tells me you need a new engine. The only way that you don't is if the hole is in the oil pain. Either way your going to have to tear it apart and see what damaged occured when it threw the rod.

$900 for something that's been dumped and has a blown engine doesn't sound good.

The easiest thing to do is probably just buy a used engine off ebay for 500 or so bucks and slap it in and be done with it....

I've got an engine and a gauge cluster if you want to purchase the bike for a project one.

I'd buy it with every intention of putting a new engine in it. You're prolly talking 5x as much trouble and time trying to fix the existing one. And prolly not at much of a savings

I'd knock a couple hundred off and call it fair. You could part out the bike in its current condition for more than $900, especially if it comes with a clean title frame.

I don't want to part it out, I want a good project bike to work on. The title is clean and no problems with that. So my best options would be to get a new engine and slap it on there rather than trying to fix the engine. So should I ask the guy to drop the price due to the engine completly blown? If so abeer1 you might be getting an email from me soon if I get this bike.

I'd offer low (his word the engine is the only issue, she's been dropped, towing expenses, yada yada) $500. See what you can talk him down to. But I'd definitely grab it for a project.
