Hey all,

So last night I put a 929 front end in my f4i. Everything went smoothly, but when I torqued down the top nut on the triple clamp the threading on the steering stem only came up about 1/3 of the way on the nut.

I am worried that the steering stem nut (weird nut on top of top bearing), is not tightened down all the way.

Any ideas, suggestions?

better yet, anyone have the honda tool # 07916-3710100, the socket that tightens down the steering stem bolt? I'll gladly buy/rent from you.

 

So you're saying the threads of the steering stem don't come out of the top of the final nut, that the nut on top of the top clamp is only partially on the stem? You're steering stem bearing nut, the wierd one you speak of with the flat portion that covers the seal is supposed to be torqued to around 15 ft. pounds. Then you put on the thin flat lock washer, then the lock nut on top of the washer goes on hand tight at first. After its hand tight, tighten the lock nut about 1/4 turn further until the tabs of the lock washer can be bent into place on the lower bearing nut and the lock nut itself. Then the top triple clamp, then the final steering stem nut on top. The nut on top is supposed to be torqued to about 75 ft lbs I think, which is about the same as the lug nuts on a Jeep or light truck. Don't bother with the Honda tool, I didn't. Do some searching on google and search my old posts for how I did mine earlier this year. I used the spanner wrench that came in my bike's toolkit although you may not have one. You should get a torque wrench though. Also a 1 & 11/16 12 point deep socket will fit but you'll probably never find one. My top nut still hasn't been torqued down yet and the top of the stem is flush with the top of the top nut. Good luck
