Default 8,000 mile oil change interval?

Correct me if I am wrong, but honda recommends an 8,000 mile oil change interval on the F4i's? Does anybody actually do this?

It seems like an awfully long time to go on an oil change on such a high revving engine. I think I will be doing oil changes every 3-4k instead.

An 8000 mile OCI is rather excessive; couldn't agree more (American logic perhaps). I drain mine around 3K, but I don't change the filter every time. The filter gets tossed every second or third oil change.

Where does Honda say 8k OCI?? The manual that came with mine says every 4k, including filter.

Question

In the 2001 Owner's Manual - page 75 (link), and in the '01-'03 Service Manual - Section 3-3 (link).

Different circumstances, but I have gotten to where I change it every 7-10 in my automobiles - Mobil 1 in all of those except the Truck where I use a Diesel Valvoline Blend (of course that thing holds 16quarts, and I rarely tow anything with it so it has an easy life)

My father changed it every 10-12 (occasionally more) in a Nissan Stanza he had and he gave it away at 350k miles - the current owner still drives it well past 400k.....

Also depends on the type of oil. Synthetic has a considerably longer effective life... so if you use full synthetic like a lot of people on here do... you can push it back a ways. I run the Rotella T synthetic in my F3 and I tend to go about 6k miles between changes.

Personally I think people go way overboard on oil changes on vehicles, not just bikes. It's one of the easy/cheap maintenance things they can do and so they do it quite often and it makes them feel like they're maintaining their bike well. I've seen some people talk about changing at 1-2k around here... geez. I can't see the reasoning myself but to each his own. lol

Agreed - and sometimes I think those people do it just so they can say the did it every 1-2.

Look at any new car these days almost every interval is 7500....

The PO of my bike said in his CL ad that the bike had been "serviced every 1000 miles" which seemed pretty excessive to me. I bought it with around 21000 on it and just changed oil at 22350 last night. Feels like the engine runs smoother and gearbox is less notchy so I have no idea what oil he was using. He did have a honda filter on it though...I used rotella t6 5w-40 and a supertech filter per the oil & filters website (http://motorcycleinfo.calsci.com/FilterXRef.html). I'll probably go about 2.5 or 3k before the next one.

I have a '92 240sx with 188000 miles on it and I use mobil 1 full synthetic 0w-40 with mobil filters and I always keep the revs way down for gas mileage so I change it about every 5k miles.

It depends on that kind of riding, oil in the bike, and amount of riding. I change mine twice a season, once in the middle, and once at the end before storage. Last season I put about 9.5k miles on it, and changed it twice. I won't ever change it more than that.
