2001 F4I cam tensioner and over heating problem??
So i just got this 01 minty red and black f4i for $3,500 and im starting to see why it was so cheap some one please explain to me whats up with my bike and tell me if its bad? the bike rattles between 3-4000 rpms cause the timming belt tensioner is worn and loose or sumthin, and the bike heats up fast at a stand still with out the fan kicking on i checked the connections there good, could i be a fuse? or temp sensor? or bad fan motor?
and does anyone elses f4i make that rattling sound? the guy i bought it from said he had the dealership take it apart and check it out said there was nothing wrong and it should affect the bikes performance?...i dont know bout u but a rattling that happens consistently between 3-4000 rpms doesnt sound like everything is good, supposobly even they ran a compression test and thats all good to?
please send sum knowlege and advice im freakin out over the overheating and rattling?
I have read throught his forum and found lots of useful info on fixing the cam tensioner, but here is one more new Q what kinda problems will arise if i dont replace the cam tensioner? will i loose power? will the life of the engine be shortened?
and my 954 fans kicks on at like 215 degrees so my f4i;s should too right? how do i fix it if its pluged in and no fusses are blown?

The fan will have a fuse or at least be grouped together on a fuse with some other things. Check all of your fuses. I have a Service Manual at home I can check tonight if I remember. I would disconnect the fan and put power directly to it to see if it works. I am an electrical engineer though and don't mind messing with this type of thing. You should be able to put 12V directly to the fan and it should turn.

it's the cam chain tensioner lifter making the noise not the cam chain tensioner. it won't kill you or anything, or lose power, jump timing or anything, it's just loud because the retaining pin at the base of the cctl is loose. you can replace with a new one or flatten out the sides of the pin to make it tight so it won't rattle. the cctl is still working properly, just loud.
as for the heat...
how hot is hot before the fan kicks on? 228 is normal. from a cold start, should take a good amount of time to get there though.
now if you're getting there awfully fast from cold start and it's not that hot out, you want to check your fluid levels. maybe your out of coolant.
maybe your temp sensor is bad, or could be your fan switch, etc.
you didn't say if it ever turns on or not.
