Oil usage
 
Hey all,
So I did my first track day on the CBR on Tuesday! I was so impressed with the way the bike handled and allowed me to make so many overtakes in the corners. Overtaking £20k worth of Ducati and Fireblades in one corner on the brakes :icon_worthy:

Anyway, question time!
I checked the oil half way through the day and it was still at the maximum level. On returning home I checked it again and there is no reading on the dipstick. Is it normal to burn/use that much oil on a track day?

Also, having removed the centre stand can somebody tell me if I stand the bike up to measure the oil how much the reading will be out?

Temporarily eplacing the centre stand is not an option as I had to cut it off as it was seized solidly in place.

You are suppose to check the oil with the bike standing straight up. Remove dip stick, wipe clean, stand bike perfectly straight up, insert dip stick, but dont screw it in, pull it out. This is the correct way according the the Honda manual.

Ah ok thanks, Haynes manual says to place bike on centre stand.


So is it expected for a bike of this age to use that much oil?

No, that's a problem! Even when you're riding the crap out of these bikes they're oil tight and shouldn't burn or leak practically any oil. Do you have any idea what your bike's exhaust smells or looks like under load? That's where I'd start. There are a lot of things it could be: valve guides/seals, rings, regular old oil leaks... Have you noticed oil consumption in more regular riding? I believe you're talking about being down around a liter of oil. Also, you need to check the oil with the bike warm, at least 1 minute of idling. If you check cold, it will seem low on oil IIRC.

Exhaust wasn't giving out any blue smoke etc, not sure on smells.
To check the oil I let the bike idle for a few minutes to get up to temperature then cool for one minute and then checked. I've not done any valve checks since having the bike (only 300 miles ago). I guess I will have to check all that out.

I will also top up the oil and get bike really warm and see if any oil drips out whilst idling. If not ill take it for a gentle road ride and see if any usage occurs.

When topping the oil up I will see how much I have to add to get to maximum and report back!
