F2 - F4i Gauge swap write up
#12
I just did the swap using this guide and so far so good. I haven't yet gotten my 900rr sprocket cover in the mail, or my speedo healer, but aside from that everything is working. Indicator lights, Neutral, High beam, FI light for the kickstand. The thing even shuts itself off now if I put the kickstand down while it's in gear!
The one issue I'm having however is that my temp reads 230 degrees or so as soon as I start the bike. This is a cold start mind you, and it just keeps climbing from there, so the temp is flashing and the warning light is on non stop. On my stock cluster, the temperature gauge functioned normally. Do I need to swap in a different temperature sender, and if so, which one should I use?
Appreciate the helps guys.

you need the 98-99 900rr temp sensor (the one that goes in the thermostat houseing not the radiator thats the one for the fans). i do belive it 96-97 900rr sprocket cover and sensor is for the speedometer to read the spead off of the front sprocket cover. but be careful when taking the temp sensor out of the thermo housing theyre natorious for breaking off in the threads then your screwed. also you can use an f4i temp sensor but you have to drill and tap which is to much work. i have this swap done on my f2 i have the speedo healer v4 and i think mine is set at like 900 and something percent i believe and i have 15-43 sprockets. you can do this with the stock sprocket cover but you wont have a speedo. any more questions just ask. im also as we speak bolting up my f4i fairings yaaaay! it sucks though lol its giving me more problems than i thought but im using the factory mounting holes for the f4i im not filling them in and drilling new ones. looks better to me and more like factory

oh and just to let you guys know you dont have to cut your plugs off of your f4i gauges to wire them to your f2. i do belive the f2 and f4i had the same style plugs for the gauges to work. all you have to do is find which spot in the f4i plug the wires are and change them in your plug on the f2 wiring harness you can get tools at radio shack (for taking the pins out). to me this would be alot more neater than hacking a bunch of wiring up!

think about it (money wise)
I did this swap and it worked fine the only thing i found afetr all is that if you dont find all the parts needed cheap it will become really expensive, even with ebay buy it now prices everything togheter can go up to 400+ bucks and a lot of time looking for 95-97 900RR sprocket cover and speed sensor (i have 2 sets btw if anyone interested 60 ea.) so i guess the best thing to do for a digital gauge upgrade for an F2 could be the aftermarket stuff like KOSO or TRAILTECH the first one have a bounch of diferent cool styles and for less money than this swap and all the sensors, cables and mounting harware is included the intructions are pretty easy to undertand, i already install one of them in my streetfighter and i dont pay more than 200.
