Well since DunnRR was kind enough to nominate my old steed, I figured it was only fair to the membership, that I explain a little about what you're looking at. It's certainly not the "newest" bike (by ANY means) considering that it's almost 15 years old, but some of you guys asked me to put the bike in this next BOTM thread and thanks to DunnRR - it's already been done. So here's a simple explanation behind why I posted a thread for the bike in the detailing forum...
Anyway what you’re looking at (for those who haven't seen my thread) is primarily a bone stock 1991 CBR600F2 with little more than a Vance & Hines slip-on and a Cheetha’ wind screen for aftermarket parts.
I know the “pink” isn’t the most popular color today for the old CBR and many have removed the pink form their bikes if nothing else. But I’ve dealt with it for almost 20 years now, and - it "was" - the hot ticket back in the early 1990's. So I guess you'd call this a "retro" look with a tiny bit of updating.
Unfortunately I had the misfortune of laying the bike down in a grass median in August of 2008. Most of the damage was cosmetic, but still expensive to replace! At least for me it is anyway. The bike went down on its right side and the lower cowl was spared (for the most part) because it was in grass except for a couple of spots where the engine casing bolts hit hard on the fiberglass (from the inside) causing it to crack. The rear break pedal was bent rather well and worst of all my Yoshimura slip-on was pretty much destroyed, because just before I came to a “sliding stop” the brake pedal hit a cement culvert spinning the bike around where the slip-on was chewed up by the concrete. Maybe if I had had a set of frame sliders they might have dug in stopping me sooner in the grass. I guess I’ll never know for sure.
After fixing most of the damage it still nagged at me knowing I couldn’t afford the $500 lower cowl replacement! So being an artist illustrator, I though maybe some kind of wrap (like you see on cars and trucks) might do the trick, or at the least give me some peace of mind and closure. I came up with several in-depth and intricate designs (some better than others), but again my hopes were dashed when I realized that even this route could get rather expensive! Especially if the wrap was a “printed” graphic.
So it back to the drawing board once more, only this time I had to come up with something that didn’t include printing using just colored vinyl. The stars you see on the bottom half of the lower cowl (on both sides) are the results of the design I came up with that looked fairly decent (in my mind at least) and worked well with the existing 1991 manufacturer’s graphics. And at $40 it was an affordable alternative, although I had to be my own vinyl installer.
In any case that’s what I’ve done to the old girl to give her a little bit of a face lift. Although it's been suggested by some that I stick the old girl in this month's BOTM, I certainly don't expect to win, as there are some really sweet nominees that certainly make mine look pretty silly in this group.
Thanks for the nomination again DunnRR.
