valve shim adjustment
 

ive got my bike in the garage having the valve clearances checked, its just turned 18,000!
he said he is going to do it as 2 jobs meaning, he is going to strip it and check them, then if it needs any changing he will have it back again to fit them as the cams have to be removed!
sounds expensive!

Do you hear a valve knocking? If your bike is running good then I would leave it alone. My 954 has 23k miles and I have yet to check the valves. I once asked the service manager at a local Honda dealer and he said the same thing. Too expensive to just check them. If you want your valves checked why will the mechanic not do the adjustment (if needed) while he has your bike apart. Seems like a waste of time and money to take the bike apart twice if any of the valve shim need to be changed.

Valve jobs around here are about $175-$200 at a bike shop. Thats not that expensive. When does it recommend a valve job for your bike model?? Thats when you should do one. Not wait until you hear valves knocking around! I hear alot of "cutting corners" advice around here and I dont agree with this logic.

it says 16000 miles for the valve clearances to be checked, i just wanted to keep the full service history up, ive only had the bike 3 weeks!
No noises to worry about, i rung up today and its all fine, hopefully pick it up tomorrow, new plugs fited too while it was all off!

We did this on our F4i motor in our car. It will take a few hours to do, but over all its pretty easy especially if you have the service manual. My piece of advice would be to make ABSOLUTELY sure you know which cup and shim come off of each valve, and make sure you keep them in order or your life will be hell. Also you can order rolls of assorted size shims online, I would do that before you start, so you can just swap one out if you find your clearances aren't right.
