Transmission information needed.
Hello ladies and gentlemen,
I come here as a fellow biker and to some veteran/brother in arms. To save a long story I will give you a breakdown. Purchased a 2002 954rr. First large motor bike I've ever bought and also paid in cash so it was a big deal.
4th gear is completely gone. I shift release clutch accelerate and it it pops violently into 3rd. Does not matter if I'm going 5mph or 140. I can skip forth and ride 5th and 6th just fine.
I've read these are infamous for these issues and I need to know what the I can do as prevention so it does not happen after I put in new parts.
Thanks!

Fourth gear and the shift forks/drum are probably the weakest part of the 954. The forks and drum can be replaced without removing the engine. You can get a good look at the gears and see how bad the damage. If you need to replace any of the gears then you must remove engine and split the cases. The only way to prevent it from happening again is to have the transmission undercut to prevent missed shifts.
