Are you sure it was a 1000? It's not uncommon to put 1000 stickers on a 600 or 750 or vise verse? Like I said.....currently having one in my garage and having ridden several other 1000's and two 945's........the 54 just wont run with a 1000 in a straight line if everyone is trying. Maybe he was sluffing off hoping for you to bite on some money racing? Who knows, but if you would like to try a stock 1000 I'd love to give it a whirl. LOL.
If you know the gearing obviously you either know him or have talked to him. Is he a friend? I dont know.......you got lucky I guess but I wouldnt recommend doing it for money with any other GSX-R 1000.

As for the top speed, I guess I never tried on my friends bike.......Motorcyclist clocked the 01 1000 at 179mph......I assume the 02 is similar and same for an 03-04.......not much over 180 at all. They clocked the 929 at 169mph.......a 954 is probably good for the mid 170's or so.
All bikes after 2000 were governed to 186..........my speedo will read 186......but obviously it's not going that fast.
I know this doesnt answer your question at all.......I'm just in the mood to type today.

 

i dont know dude...a stretched out 1k......... if both bikes are stock....he should have eaten your *** alive...but there are those flooks out there....

 

its all on the rider, doesnt matter if u have a busa or 14 if u cant ride it a 600 is gonna tear u a new a**hole and ur gonna play catch up to beat him. love to run across "trailered track bikes" that think cuz there bike will do 9 in the 1/4 that their untouchable, my response is "take them mu***f*****'s off the trailer and see who gets to McDonalds first!" im sorry but theres no real skill in goin in a straight line real fast, but there is skill in takin the tires down to the sidewalls and standin up a 2nd gear untill the brake light disappears from behind. gixers are fast especially the new ones but im not sold on a gixer or a r1 if its anything besides honda its gonna be the zx10. and to answer the question my speedo said 170 but without a steering damp is not worth tryin to stay on it to go faster

 

No skill in drag racing? You have obviously never tried it or if you did you were SORELY disappointed in the results. There is a LOT of skill involved with cutting a 1.80 or better 60ft. on a street bike.
But right before that you said that it's all in the rider.......and if you can't ride that a 600 will tear you up? Seems like a contradiction of terms. Oh well........again.......he went from a roll.......no real skill involved in that you're right........so threoretically a 1000 SHOULD have destroyed that 954. Who knows why it didnt? It's hard to say as we werent there riding either one of them.

Simple answer, i am not sure. The fastest i have gone is 160 even and that was pretty much pinning 5th gear. I have stock gears and no speedo correction. I assume i could prolly hit 170's if i shifted which i guess is like 150ish for real speed.

 

got her up to 167 tonight. No speedo healer

 

i think your are the one sucking up to much fumes if you say that in an honest race you beat a 1k enough to stop and look back and he was still comming...well i agree with gixxereater he was trying to hustle you...you got your answer...

 

Only other thing i can say is i dont see what year gix it was. I suppose if its a 00-01 it could be closer, but if its a new one forget it. Rode my buddies 06 and that thing is wicked fast, i know i would lose all day long and thats knowing i can actually outride him.
