Just bought an 02 954RR and have some questions
So far I love this bike. I have been riding different 600s for about 6 years now. I finally decided that I wanted to step up to something larger. I was set on a newer RR, but then this bike came up for sale. I bought it from the original owner with 5660 miles on it for $5300!! I think its a steal!!
Its a CA spec bike so this may or may not have anything to do it, but I wanted to put that out there first. This bike is a real ball burner!! If I sit to close to the tank, then things really get hot and I feel like I'm scrambling eggs!! Is this normal for this bike? I have ridden other bikes that get hot on your inner thighs and crotch, but damn this thing is hot! Just moving around a bit and getting some airflow pretty much keep things cool. Is there anything I can do to help dissipate some of the heat?
I should also mention that I am in Texas and right now its not unusual to see 100* days. Yesterday was a perfect example. While cruising on the bike I see temps of 180-190 in the heat of the day while moving at normal traffic speeds. On the highway you can sometimes see temps in the upper 170s but only briefly. While sitting in traffic or stuck at red lights, I have seen the temp get as high as 226*. Yesterday when I got home the bike was about 200* so I decided to do a little test. I left the bike running, but sitting still. The fan kicked on at 213*, but the temps kept climbing. I finally shut it off at 230*. It seemed like the fan couldn't do anything to bring the temp back down. Does anybody else have this same problem?
Last weekend I changed the oil and coolant so I could start fresh. I first started having these high temps last week while riding to work so it prompted me to change out the fluids. Since I'm in TX (and our winters are fairly mild) I only added 1 bottle of Honda HP coolant. I then added in two ounces of Water Wetter and topped off with distilled water. As long as I'm moving the temps are fine, but in low MPH, traffic or redlights the temp comes up to what seems to be pretty high to me. Since changing the coolant it seems to take longer to climb, but it still gets up there!

Nothing to worry about KC. The 954 likes to stretch its legs to keep cool. The temps you are experiencing are the same for mine. These bikes dont like to sit still for long. Getting your eggs hardboiled by the tank makes you appreciate fueling up a little more. There is nothing better than pressing up and pancaking the "sac" against a full, cool, tank of fuel...........

Welcome to CBRF. yep, those 220-230 temps in stop/go traffic are normal .. lightly fried ***** are also the special of the day on this bike but i don't even really notice it anymore. it probably helps your boys swim better to heat'em up a lil.

Not a big fan of adding the Water wetter because you never know that you got the mix rite as these bikes have such a low capacity. I have had very good lucky with ProLogics Engine Ice. Both my Hurricane 1000 and my 954 run cooler, my temps on a hot day run 215-220 sitting. The biggest benifit though has been how fast the bike cools down from stoplight to stoplight. You may want to try it, also changing the seat if you want to got the extra mile. Good luck to ya.
